New life is set to be breathed into a building on the outskirts of Kirkcudbright.

The town’s development trust has taken ownership of a hut that used to belong to Oakbank School in Keighley in Yorkshire.

And they plan to rebrand it as The Hut to offer accommodation to groups and families.

The Oakbank School Adventure Hut, also known locally as the Keighley camp, started life as an officer’s mess and was bought by the school just after the First World War came to an end.

It then operated as a summer camp for thousands of pupils from Oakbank – previously known as Keighley Boys Grammar School – over the years.

It operated from the summer of 1911 to October 2018 before the school decided to close it due to various factors.

Ownership has now been transferred to the trust, who plan to rent it out to various groups such as large families, Scouts, Guides, walkers, cyclists and any other groups of people who want to experience a basic lifestyle in Kirkcudbright and surrounding areas.

The key to the building was handed over to the trust on Saturday by people with a connection to Keighley and Oakbank.
