Ground investigation works on the Whitesands in Dumfries will begin mid-June for 16 weeks.

Dumfries and Galloway Council said it “represents an important milestone in the progress of this Whitesands Project” as it will examine the ground conditions at various points along the proposed alignment of the Flood Protection and Public Realm Improvements Scheme.

It will provide additional data to inform the detailed design process, to build on the current outline design.

Chairperson of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s communities committee, Councillor Ian Blake said: “This is an important stage for the Whitesands Flood Defence Scheme that was voted through by the full council.

“It is a necessary step that must be taken before the full scheme can be implemented.”

The Whitesands Project was presented to elected members at full council last October and members agreed to progress the published Flood Protection Scheme.

The council believes the scheme will provide both flood protection and regeneration for the Whitesands area of Dumfries.
Committee vice chairperson, Councillor Jackie McCamon, said: “The appointment of Turner & Townsend will provide technical project management services.

“This will give our council access to an experienced team of flood project specialists who have recently worked on a number of major projects across Scotland and the wider United Kingdom.”
