The 17th of May each year is marked as International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) and was created in 2004 to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBT communities across the world.

Police Scotland is committed to tackling such discrimination due to the significant impact on individuals and communities across Scotland and works with a range of partners to offer support and guidance.

On Friday 17th May 2024, to mark IDAHOBIT PC Paul Murphy from Dumfries attended an event at Rbc FilmTheatre organised by D&G based Dumfries and Galloway LGBT Plus under the theme, “ ‘No-one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all’ – What are you doing about it?”

A ‘human library’ of speakers gave moving accounts of their experiences growing up and living now as members of the LGBT community and the challenges and discrimination they faced and still face. They were supported by a series of short but powerful films about discrimination and the power of love and change.

Constable Murphy spoke about how Policing had changed and evolved during his service to being an organisation that looks to combat discrimination and promote equality both within itself and in our communities.
