And the BAFTA goes to . . .

A DOCUMENTARY about the Lockerbie disaster was named best factual series of 2023 at the Bafta Awards on Sunday night.

‘Lockerbie’ was made by Mindhouse Productions for Sky Documentaries and aired last November.

The production team were shocked but delighted to win, as director John Dower told DNG Media this week: “It does feel strange accepting an award, the applause and the accolades for what is at its heart is a horrific story – 270 people murdered just before Christmas.

“But we did set out to also try and document the extraordinary acts of kindness and compassion that came out of that terrible day and nowhere typified that more than the actual town of Lockerbie.

“I do think that’s one of the things that has struck a chord with viewers. As one of the American relatives in the series says, “Lockerbie taught the world a lesson in humanity”.

In his acceptance speech on stage, John had also praised Jim Swire as ‘one of the most extraordinary people I have met in 20 years of doing this’, sparking applause from the celebrity audience.

It was one of three nominations for the documentary, with John missing out on the best director factual gong, and a shortlist also in the factual editing category.
