Warm welcome to Lockerbie for Ultraman

EX-FOOTBALLER Ashley Cain made a pit stop in Lockerbie this week as part of his Ultraman challenge.

He is currently taking on a world first by crossing Britain three times from Land’s End to John O’Groats – once running, once cycling, and once kayaking, over the course of three months. His route will total nearly 3000 miles by the end.

His inspiration for it all is his late daughter Azaylia, who died of leukaemia in April 2021 at just eight-months-old.

Since that tragedy former Coventry City and Luton player Ashley, 33, has become an endurance athlete and childhood cancer activist, running marathons, ultramarathons, cycling the length of Britain, kayaking 1000 miles and climbing one of the world’s highest peaks all in her name and to help fight childhood cancer.

All monies raised will go to the The Azaylia Foundation, which he set up with his then partner Safiyya Vorajee to help fight childhood cancer and the system.

Discussing Ultraman, Ashley: “It’s time to step up the fight. For Azaylia, and for the thousands of children fighting cancer every year.

“That’s over 2780 miles of physical endurance and mental strength, of turning pain into purpose, none of which would be possible without the guidance and protection of my hero, watching me from above.

“But this isn’t just any world’s first challenge. It’s an opportunity to raise funds for The Azaylia Foundation’s incredible Childhood Cancer PhD Scholarship Programme, which has already funded five PhDs. So please donate to help us reach our game changing target of 20 PhDs in five years.”

He will also use it as an opportunity to campaign for key change.

Delighted to see supporters and well wishers on the route through Annandale, Ashley added: “Please support this fight in any way you can, people movements are how we achieve change for our children, and every single action matters.

“If I see you along the way, be that for a smile, a cheer or a sweaty hug, you’ll fill my heart with warmth.”
