Tree-tastic efforts boost rewilding

REWILDING efforts near Moffat have resulted in 23,000 trees being planted in the hills surrounding the town since autumn.

The Border Forest Trust which overseas the Wild Heart plantings released the figures on Wednesday revealing that at Talla and Gameshope 3825 montane plants were planted by volunteers, 3961 montane plants were also put in by contractors, a further 10,533 trees were put in the ground by volunteer and 1001 plants by contractors

At other Wild Heart sites like Carrifran 430 plants were sown by volunteers. And at Corehead, 855 montane plants were put into the ground by volunteers, while 4450 others were planted by contractors along with 100 others.

Commenting on the success of the 2023-2024 plantings, a spokesperson for the Border Forest Trust thanked everyone who helped them reach the impressive milestone and said: “A big thank you to Treesurv, who did a great job doing our contractor planting this season.

“The rest of the planting was done by our heroic volunteers, who we can’t thank enough for all their hard work! Together, you’ve made a huge difference in improving the biodiversity of the Southern Uplands for years to come.

“A big thanks also to Destination Tweed UK ,The national lottery and Rabbie’s for their funding and support which helped these planting days happen.”
