Dumfries preparing for 2024 Guid Nychburris Parade

Organisers are inviting entries for the parade which will be held at 5pm on the big day.

The Guid Nychburris Association said cash prizes will be awarded for category winners – walking, decorated vehicles (clubs/groups: decorated vehicles (business/ advertising), equine, and cycling – with The Burns Howff Trophy presented to the Overall Parade Winner.

There is also a children’s fancy dress competition earlier on the day at 2pm in the Loreburn Hall car park, with all participants who sign up to receive a medal. There will be cash prizes/certificates and a Guid Nychburris rosette for winners.

It is open to children aged eight years and under; nine to 16 years; and groups (maximum of six persons), with the overall fancy dress competition winner receiving the Jim Doig Memorial Trophy.

The Dumfries Lions Club have accepted an invitation from the Guid Nychburris Committee to judge the entries in this year’s parade.

The club have been involved in this event in recent years and president, John MacColl, said: “We are looking forward to being involved in this popular local event again this year and hopefully everyone will have an enjoyable day.”

Those in the children’s fancy dress event can also take part in the parade if they want.

Guid Nychburris Day will also see the ever popular Reid’s Amusements and their Fun Fair Rides again being a major part of the fun on Dumfries’ special day and there will be three children’s street entertainers on the High Street in Daffy Dill, Road Runner and Verity Power stilt walker and fire eater.

Sparkle and Pop Face and Body Art will also be there on Guid Nychburris Day and other entertainers, groups, singers and dancers will be announced in due course.

By kind permission of Queen of the South Football Club, this year’s Guid Nychburris primary schools football competitions will be played at The Queen of the South Arena from Monday, June 3, to Friday, June 7.

Teams from Primary Schools in Nithsdale will compete during the week, with entries coming in from schools at present.

Groups and dates are: Monday, June 3: Primary 5’s; Tuesday, June 4: Primary 6’s; Wednesday, June 5: Primary 7’s; Thursday, June 6: Small Schools; Friday, June 7, Girls teams.

Matches are due to start at 9.15am each morning with trophies and medals being presented around noon.

The Guid Nychburris Festival Association will be joined by senior students of Dumfries High School who will assist with the running of the tournament and are grateful to Queen of the South for their support in hosting it.

Spectators are welcome to attend and support the tournament.

Other events announced for this year’s Guid Nychburris include a Senior Citizens Concert on Tuesday, June 11, from 2pm to 4.30pm, in The Parkhouse Suite of the Cairndale Hotel, Dumfries, by kind permission and generosity of The Wallace Family. Entertainment will be provided by John Caskie, the McRobert Brothers and Gregor Grierson.

It is a ticket only event and they can be picked up for free (maximum of two per person) on Thursday, May 30, at 11am only from The Community Room at Morrisons Supermarket, Leafield Road, Dumfries.

Organsers stress that tickets cannot be pre-booked and are grateful to The Wallace Family, Cairndale staff and Morrisons for their help and support.

This year’s Guid Nychburris 5K Road Race hosted by Dumfries Running Club in the grounds of The Crichton estate will be held on Tuesday, June 11, from 7pm and registration is now open via the link www.entrycentral.com/event/124773.

Also on June 11 will be the Guid Nychburris Family Pet Show for various classes on the County Buildings on the County Buildings car park, Newall Terrace.

Entry is free to all, with cash prizes, certificates and the 2024 Guid Nychburris Rosettes for 1st/2nd/3rd in each class.

There will be a special prize for the overall winner.

Registration is from 6.30pm with judging from 7pm (approx).

The much loved and popular Guid Nychburris Baby Show will take place on Friday, June 14, in St Mary’s Church Hall with registration at 10.30am and the judging from 10.45am (doors open at 10am).

It offers free entry for age categories: birth to under six months; six months to under 12 months; 12 months to under 18 months; 18 months to under 24 months; 24 months to under 30 months; 30 months to 36 months; and twins.

There will be cash prizes, rosettes
and certificates for first, second and third placed.
