Digging in for Moffat’s covid forest memorial

DOZENS of very special trees were planted in Moffat yesterday as part of a national project.

They are helping to make up Dumfries and Galloway’s Dispersed Memorial Forest, which is part of the region’s contribution to the covid Remembering Together initiative.

Moffat’s Community Nature Reserve is one of five sites locally, along with Castle Douglas, Dumfries, Sanquhar, and Stranraer.

DG Unlimited and Dumfries and Galloway Council are working in collaboration with greenspace scotland and Commissioned Artists TS Beall and Katie Anderson to deliver the unique woodland, which will comprise 400 trees in total. Each one of those represents someone lost to covid locally.

Helping with the Moffat planting were volunteers from the reserve and Borders Forest Trust.

The project will be completed in June 2024, creating a living memorial for those that were lost to the virus, and a space for future generations to come together and reflect.
