Dumfries’ multifunctional cultural space, the Robert Burns Centre, has boosted its Visit Scotland quality assurance rating.

The RBC has seen significant investment in its visitor facilities in the past year, thanks to a Museums Galleries Scotland grant and funding from Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The upgrade from three starts to four follows a recent mystery shopper visit which highlighted the quality of the exhibition space and the friendliness and professionalism of the staff and also noted the significant improvements to the toilet facilities in the past year.

Opened in 1986 in a former water mill on the banks of the River Nith, the RBC is home to Dumfries’ independent cinema and a museum focused on Robert Burns’ life in Dumfries.

The museum exhibition space was redeveloped in 2018 to include audio visual interpretation and touchscreens. It houses part of the National Burns Partnership’s recognised collection of Burns objects including Burns’ suitcase, a cast of his skull and his poetic works.

Councillor Ian Blake, chairman of the council’s communities committee, said: “‘We are so pleased that the investment in the facilities has been recognised in this way.

“This award gives us an opportunity to shine a light on our amazing staff who offer such a warm welcome to visitors from near and far.”
