The crash happened as he was heading to a training session at his club.

A club statement said: “Dapo Mebude underwent successful surgery after his accident. Tomorrow we will get more information about his situation. We thank the medical staff of AZ Brugge for the good care.”

It had earlier posted : “The practice match between Knokke and KVO was cancelled due to a car accident of player Dapo Mebude.

“Our thoughts are already with Dapo and his family.”

The 22-year-old striker joined Queens on loan from Rangers on a short-term deal in 2021.

In a statement on its website the Palmerston club said: “Everyone at Queen of the South would like to send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to former loan striker Dapo Mebude who was involved in a serious car crash in Belgium over the weekend.

“Dapo, who has been playing for KV Oostende whilst in Belgium, is reported to have suffered ‘life threatening injuries’.”
