Revised dairy centre gets the go-ahead

PLANNING permission has been given for revised proposals for the new Dairy Innovation Centre on the Barony campus.

It has been granted conditionally by the planning department at Dumfries and Galloway Council.

The main difference to the scheme which was approved earlier this year is that it has dropped from a two storey building to a single storey.

In addition, the footprint has been rotated to align with the orientation of nearby farm buildings; plus, the design has been revised so it’s more functional and modular.

However, the aims remain the same: to provide a dairy innovation centre associated with the operational Barony College educational and research facility.

Commenting in his report, council case officer John Hiscox said: “By comparison to the approved scheme, which appeared to have architectural positivity as a core consideration, the revised scheme is considered to be less attractive from a visual point of view. Its functional character arguably diminishes the sense of positivity; however, it would simultaneously cause the building to be more recessive in its local context, to a great extent because, in terms of its scale, it would be more subservient to the large farm building complex adjacent.

“The orientation could be described as being more logical in terms of its relationship with the nearby farm complex, aligning with it rather than contrasting with it.”

Nonetheless, permission has been given with conditions that the development must be begun within three years.
